Background:

Founded in 1979, the nonprofit organization, National Alliance For The Mentally Ill (NAMI) has more than 210,000 members and 1,200 State/Local Affiliates who seek equitable services for people with mental illnesses, which are known to be physical brain disorders. Working on the national, state, and local levels, NAMI provides education about brain disorders, supports increased funding for research, and advocates for adequate health insurance, housing, rehabilitation,and jobs for people with psychiatric illnesses, as well as providing resources.

Recent advances in medical research, treatment, and recovery now enable individuals with mental disorders, such as depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia, anxiety and other mood disorders to lead productive lives. Within the community, organized efforts are still needed. NAMI St.Tammany works to further this goal.

NAMI St. Tammany provides:

  • Education regarding the facts of neuro-biological brain disorders/mental illness
  • Education for Parents and caregivers of youth and adolescents living with mental illness
  • Advocacy for the needs and the protection of those who suffer from these disorders
  • Support Groups for families and caregivers
  • Support Groups for adults living with mental illness
  • Partnerships with our elected state legislators, Office of Mental Health, and local Mental Health providers
  • Resources including the latest research and information regarding specific needs, coping skills, problem solving, and services

Help Support NAMI St. Tammany:

The 3rd Annual Comic Relief Gala will come back to the Northshore on August 27, 2010. There will be a short presentation on current Mental Health legislation by Senator Jack Donahue, followed by the comedy of James Cusimano.
